MORE UPDATES!

Naaaah.. not really! Nothing much has happened really apart from apple picking! But good news is that we only have 2 more days MAX of apple picking left! We have improved A LOT since I last blogged! We can easily pick 10 bins now if we want to. But tiredness do hit us now and again, and even though we’ve gotten better at picking, the picking season is pretty much over, so pretty much just juice left to pick (those are $20 a bin!) With juice you can be as rough with the fruit as you like.. hence faster to pick! But not as good money! We have probably a few more bins of juices to pick in the orchard we’re staying in and HOPEFULLY a day of normal picking left.

I have learned through these last few weeks that picking with BOTH hands is CRUCIAL if you want to pick more bins! It really does make a difference!

We did go see the wonderful beaches around here last week actually, Ocean beach and Waimarama beach

Ocean beach was very beautiful! We spent an hour there soaking up the sun.. because we don’t get enough of it already when we’re picking apples!

Image

Kieran wanted to swim but the winds got a bit chillier so we decided better not because the waters aren’t exactly warm either.

The drive to Ocean beach is awesome too! All the windy roads where you can drive up to 100mph! CRAZY! There was a part of the road that had collapsed, pretty scary to imagine those speeding down at 100mph and having a road collapse on them.. Luckily it was fenced off for us.

Waimarama beach was beautiful too! Didn’t stay that long though because we’d already had an hour in the sun… don’t want brown leathery skin when we’re older.. oh no!

It was SOOo hot we got Iceeee creaam to cool us down! Boysenberry flavoured icecream is SOOO tasty! $3 for a massive scoop of icecream, well worth it!

I think everyone should try boysenberry flavoured ice cream at least once when they come visit New Zealand! So tasty!

I like painting! :D

I like painting! :D

Here’s a painting I’ve done here using acrylic paints… you know with all the free time I have because apple picking is just so easy… NOT. Luckily this only took 2 hours. Yay! I like doing surreal concepts.. they’re fun and not something that everyone does! Trying to figure out my own style of painting.. don’t want to do something that everyone else can do… gotta be different ya know! 😛
Well I gave this to Tony yesterday for his birthday and he liked it so all’s good! I like making/ painting presents because they’re more personal.
Hopefully will get one more painting done before I leave! Fingers crossed.. could be three! Who knows!

Rain, rain, please stay…

please stay and come back everyday! Never thought I’d be saying this, but when it rains, it rains heavy here.. so it means picking get suspended if the apples are in no hurry to be picked! Sooo.. right now we are just chilling in the house with the rain hammering on outside! It’ll be good for the drought they’ve been having here! So Tony wants the rain for one reason and we want the rain for another! Killing two birds with one stone.. perrrrrfecto!

DSCF8869

Now… there is something interesting last night that happened … we were lying on the end of our bed on our laptops… and to our shock horror… there were loads of black insects jumping/ jump flying around on the carpet just in front of us! I had a wee panick and ran downstairs to get the hoover! But when I got back they were pretty much gone! Soooooooo groooooss!!! So we just hoovered very heavily on the area that we saw them and right around the area! Ugh.. and we think there are fleas around in the loft because Kieran has spotted a few before on his laptop and every morning for the past few mornings he’s gotten new bites… Eeeeek! Luckily I’ve been ok… but let’s not jinx it! *touch wood!*
We also found a large mantis on the wall just about the head board of our bed!! The last time we saw one was in our bedroom in Nelson and that one was very aggressive… doing crazy karate chops at us in the glass! So we were weary of this one and just did a quick catch in the glass and chucked it out! Then when Kieran was lying on the bed a spider crawled across on his arm… what an eventful insectful night! Hopefully the first and last! Not the biggest insect lover here as you can probably tell!

Baking sultana biscuits

Made more sultana biscuits today! We had a half day, finished at 12pm because there were no more apples to pick! Managed to get 2 and a half bins today, and got 7 yesterday. But once again, there’s problems with our tallies… we’ve been given our tickets and turns out we’re missing a bin… (TIP: Keep a record yourself of how many bins of fruit you pick each day and make sure you get paid the right amount because we were missing 9 bins  from our last pay!!) Seems to always be happening to us… sigh.

Any who, I ran out of plain flour, so I used self raising flour for half of the quantities! The texture was stickier than normal… but once baked was really tasty. I love cookies just out of the oven when they’re all soft and warm… Mmmmmm…

The recipe is SOOOO easy!

Ingredients:

1. 4oz butter

2. 4oz sugar

3. 1 tsp baking soda

4. 1 tbsp milk

5. 1 tbsp golden syrup

6. 1/2 cup of sultanas

7. 1 and 1/2 cup of plain flour

Method:

1. Melt the ingredients 1-6 in a pot.

2. Once cooled down, stir in the flour.

3. Heat the oven at 160-180oC depending on whether its fan or not.

4. Roll the dough into balls and place on baking tray and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown… depends how well you like them cooked really!

They’ll be soft once they’re out of the oven, but they’ll harden up once they’ve cooled down.

Yummy! Well, enjoy!

Big Black Spider!

Big Black Spider!

My finger for size comparison.. didn’t put my finger toooo close in case it was still alive! Eugh.. I hate spiders… and if you have a bigger hate than I do, then I wouldn’t advise you do apple picking.. because you’ll plunge your face into countless amounts of invisible spider webs .. and you’ll feel it on your face once you’ve gone through… eugh.. so gross! The countless number of homes I’ve destroyed during my picking days here… So sad.. so sad….
