Abel Tasman (part 3)

Before we jumped out of our tent to suicide, we packed everything up in the dark with some windy torch (you have to wind it up to charge it!)  and it was very noisy! We sprayed ourselves with insect repellent and wore long sleeves tops and full length trousers with socks over it…. I had my winter jacket on with the hood up! So we threw all our stuff out first before jumping out so we could minimize the amount of flies that would fly in! Once we were out we started packing and tidying up! When we were done we were off!

We had to trek through the beach on low tide and we saw in the distance a small stream of water… but as we got closer we realised it was a very wide stream indeed and we didn’t want to take our shoes off, but no choice… so we walked across in bare foot! It was dark so we had no idea where the path was because it was all just black ahead of us! But then we saw some flashlights so just followed that! We were lucky we didn’t try jump across the stream because after that stream there were loads more so we just walked the whole way in our bare foot! It was graaaaaand!

Image

By the time we got to the other side it was bright! so we put our shoes back on and we were off on the final episode of our hike!

 Image

We planned this one so that our last day was as easy as possible! 😛 1 hour and 15 minutes was nothing compared to the day before so we were real relaxed about this route!

Little did we know that there were some serious up hills on this one too! Like proper steep ones where it would be impossible to climb if it was raining! The weather was actually perfect because there was an overcast so it meant not as hot as the day before which made our hike less of a sweaty one!

Image

The sun was just about risen and breaking through the clouds and it was very windy as well so the waves were roudy too! It was a nice to see a different side of Abel Tasman! Image

We also saw a cicada on the sand! These insects were everywhere in Abel Tasman! They rest on the trees and make very loud noises… Similar to cricket noises?

Image

After the beach was another crazy up hill hike followed by a down hill! So many up hills and down hills… we were definitely doing some good exercise! When we came out of the final downhill, we made it to Totaranui in one piece! WE MADE IT! It was such an amazing feeling to have done all that hiking in 2 days and a bit. Felt like such an achievement!

We were surprised by how well facilitated the campsites were! They all had a kitchen, treated water and toilets! It fulfilled our basic needs, so all was good!

The only thing is they don’t have rubbish bins in Abel Tasman, so bring your own plastic bags and carry it around! That way if everyone does plays their part, it keeps the place in good form! The last thing you want is to litter the place and ruin the natural beauty of Abel Tasman!

So while we waited for the bus, because we were SUPER early, we made some cuppa soup by the beach and just chilled there!

Image

Laid out our sleeping mats and had a nap (set alarms on the phones so we don’t miss our bus!) So when the time came, we grabbed our stuff and onwards home we went! We got the Golden Bay Coachline bus (something along the lines of that!) but we had to prebook it which costed $45 which was worth it because no way we were hiking back to Marahau to get the $20 bus. And also, the camp sites had to be booked prior to the trip as well! cost us $14 per person! Which is fine if you think about it.. you get amazing views and basic facilities and seconds away from the beach!

The bus back was about… 4 hours long because it had to stop by the other places in Abel Tasman. What was real annoying was that half way through the bus ride, I couldn’t remember if I had packed our swimgear into my bag… I asked Kieran if he took the bag of wet gear and he said no.. so then I knew we had left it by the beach! I was rather annoyed because during the whole trip we had been so careful not to forget anything and on the very last minute, just before boarding the bus we forgot our swim gears! I owe Kieran a pair of swim shorts now. So so annoyed with myself every time I think about it. Oh well… moving on.

So when we got back to Nelson we were going to go shopping in Countdown for lunch and dinner… but there was a bus in 10 mins and one in an hour and a bit… and after such a long ride on the bus to Nelson we were like…aaah… screw it.. we’ll just get Subway for lunch and KFC for dinner! It worked out well.. tasty lunch and dinner. The first thing we did though when we got back was shower!! Shower has never felt so good… SO nice to feel clean again! We’re staying right beside Tahananui beach and the KFC here has a very limited choice… so we got a Hot box! Mmmmm… tasty!

It was sooooo nice to sleep in a bed again! You really do miss the comfort of your bed when you go camping! But every minute in Abel Tasman was worth it! One of those places you really have to see when you’re in Nelson!

Abel Tasman (part 1)

So we came back from Abel Tasman yesterday! It was absolutely amazing! We hiked for 3 days and stayed 2 nights! The scenery was breath-taking! There were so many bays and beaches that every one of them was as beautiful as the last! We were very  lucky that the weather was amazing the first two days, clear blue skies!!

So we got to Marahau via coach ($20) and that was our starting point! We hiked up to Anchorage Bay and every single part of the journey was amazing! You hike through jungles of tall trees and ferns! So green! and then when you come out of it you see the big blue sea and beaches and mountains! Such a view! Took us about 5 hours to get to Anchorage Bay because we took some breaks in between to chill out at the beaches!

Image

That’s one of the beaches we took a small break on! AMAZING RIgHt?!

I had a wee incident on one of the slopes, fell and grazed my knee, but all good and I’m still alive! It’s a bit annoying though hiking with a grazed knee, but sure what can ya do! So after the hours of hiking we finally reach Anchorage bay and my was it beautiful!

Image

That’s the view from the mountain top!

We set up our tent straight away … well after seeing a staff member to get plasters and antiseptic wipes for my knee! 🙂 We went back to the beach which was a minutes walk from our tent and went for a swim! It was warm with the sun but the wind didn’t help! So it took a while before I was fully in because the water seemed much colder with the wind! But once you’re completely submerged from shoulders down it’s quite warm!

Image

I won’t bore you with our little details other than we had dinner bit late.. when the sun was setting so that was when all the flies started coming out and nipping everyone! So we ate dinner in our tent! We had the silhouette of the trees on our tent which made the scenery inside quite lovely too!

Image

Any who, the next morning was a BIG day! We planned to do 2 big routes! We were going to hike to Awaroa bay from Anchorage bay! So we set off at 9:30am and after what felt like AGES we finally got to Bark bay! ONLY HALF WAY after 4 and a half hours of hiking! The views were splendid but the hiking was getting a bit tiring!

Image

So we were delighted when we got there! A nice break!

Image

That’s Bark Bay! When we got there we were tempted not to leave! Another 4.5 hours before we got to Awaroa!
