Damn this! Almost done

So I have wasted yet another day for 2% but I honestly cannot help it!!
I am almost done… I think!
I realise in coding, every new success comes with new errors!!
This is weirdly fun… I am enjoying it and I think I’d enjoy it much more if it weren’t for the fact that I should be studying for exams!

It’s as if I can see the end of the tunnel.. but it’s moving with me as I run towards it!
We will see! Deadline is tomorrow and I am definitely done after tonight… and so I say!

Damn my love for challenge

So after spending the last week pulling my hair and killing my brains trying to figure out all the scripts we need to create this web server built on BASH, yesterday the head demonstrator posted the “skeleton” of all the scripts that we need… 2 days before the deadline. For those who only started the project on Friday, lucky them they don’t have to go through hell like some of us did. However for those of us who did go through hell, does that mean our blood spilled efforts have gone to waste?!
I had a look at these so called skeletons and they contained much simpler codes than my own. However I was not ready to just give up all my hard work and efforts to start all over again using his skeleton scripts!
My classmates and I messaged back and forth discussing our “discontent” with this. It’s quite unfair, to be honest, to those who actually tried to think of a solution from scratch! So after much debate I decided that I am just going to leave the rest of the project and not even going to use the skeleton that was provided! Because if I did that would mean I needed to first read it and understand what the scripts and codes are doing, and then figure out the blanks that are there.

Oh and did I mention that all this work is only worth 10% of the module?!

So I as I mentioned above I had decided to just give up and study for my exams instead because I’ve wasted enough time on this! However, due to my annoyingly determined nature of not giving up and taking on challenges… I couldn’t focus on anything else! I tried to study other modules but I ended up thinking about how to complete the assignment for the web server. So I caved in and continued it. My super complicated codes just got more complicated and I think I may have just earned myself an extra 1% if even after spending a whole Saturday and the first hour of Sunday on it.. yes I was up until 1am trying to complete it.

Was it worth it you ask??? Well, honestly, not in the slightest! But nothing could be done until I had exhausted all ideas and knowledge of how to write the codes! So now I can finally move on! I didn’t complete it though, but I know exactly why that is and that problem is something I don’t know how to solve as we never learnt about it in class nor did google give any good insights! so I guess I can finally put this behind and move to the next challenge!

SUPER UPDATE! I’m in BRAZIL!!

So I’ve been crazy the last few months and terribly sorry for my lack of posting, but yes I have been in Brazil! Haha madness! So where did it begin?

2015/08/img_2911.jpg

I won’t bother going through crazy details but basically I applied to do a phd in Trinity College Dublin back in January and I got accepted in April 2015! I am working with the same supervisor I worked with when I did my undergraduate thesis (my final year project) there! So anyways, Fabio is his name and he tells me he will be going to Brazil for the summer (3 months) because he has a contract in Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (I will from here on in refer to this uni as UFRJ) to teach. So he asked if I would like to apply for the brazilian program they have for foreign students (basically they pay your flights to and from brazil and give you money to do part of your phd there!) so I was like HELL YEAH! But the problem was we didn’t know when we were going to hear back from the funding body so as well as applying for that we also applied for an irish funding which paid for my flights, accommodation and some food! Not a bad deal, right?! So I actually got approved by both funding bodies, hence I will fly back to Dublin on 27th August and then I will come back on 1st October till 20th February next year!!

Voila! Thus, here I am, in Rio de Janeiro, doing part of my research in UFRJ … I have never in a million years thought I’d be here right now haha! Got to just go with the flow of life I guess! I’ve actually already been here for 2 months so in my next few posts to come I shall share with you all my experience of brazil so far! Well I can for sure say that I love it here very much!!
